Having room to think…

A failing routinely cited of Americans is that they’ve had too much for too long.  A sort of entitlement sets in; a feeling that much has been given, little has been asked. I have countless ex-college buddies who sit around doing nothing; make snarky remarks about musical tastes, and politics; seem to have time to do everything to express their over-educated nature, but look through the classifieds.

I thought about the condition of the country; it is difficult to avoid the notion that part of what got America where it is is a combination of exploitation, asserting dominance, bullying in various spheres of life.  A key component of the majority’s rule - an unavoidable aspect in any thorough review - is co-opting the self-interested portion of the minority population, a group of people who could rightfully be termed sell-outs.  In doing so, they have mitigated the outright defiance by the broader minority population which knows it does not get a fair shake and is certainly not accorded equal status to the white mainstream.

The majority seems to have a strong, symbiotic relationship with Uncle Tom’s.  That term may be misapplied often, but it has meaning, relevance and when used appropriately, accurately defines the nature of certain minorities.   In thinking about how one gets into this mode, one has to realize a certain amount of emotional trauma must be inflicted to produce such useful idiots.  It could be by being surrounded by people constantly and regularly disagreed with one’s behavior resulted in an unfortunate kind of Stockholm syndrome, where those obnoxious mainstream personality quirks of judgmentalism, selfishness over money/things, and other wonderful qualities set in.  Key to such a person’s nature is deference to whites.  Raising one’s voice a few octaves when talking with them, putting on a subservient grin when dealing with them in any capacity personal or professional, taking care not to disagree with them, or to stick up for himself (or others) in event of conflict with them.  I can remember countless examples where a white service worker would be berating one family member for something or the other; inevitably they would freeze out the person they were speaking with, and train their attention on one person who would dutifully listen, nod in approval and understanding, and essentially enable the white worker to accomplish what they sought - which was to find a receptive ear for their venom, and having a useful idiot minority sitting their nodding as if to validate everything they said.  Its hard to imagine what sort of cowardice produces such an individual, but enough minorities know, whether they say it or not, there are social consequences for trying to stand up to the majority.

The relationship of the mainstream and minorities may well be changing, though one would argue if it is happening fast enough.  A very simple test would be the following - observe a white person (lets say a white male) and a minority who have met converse.  Who is talking and who is listening?  Another test to observe- one thing the mainstream seems to delight in, a childish behavior which one would assume would be retired by adulthood, is to mimic another person.  Somehow I am not surprised at this behavior, coming from a population which seems to rejoice at the misfortune of others- a simple gander at the fact that a Facegroup group called “I laugh when other people fall” has over 1 million members.  But watch when this happens how often it is that a white person do this towards a minority.  It may be done jokingly towards some minority celebrity or towards someone they meet.  And how rarely it occurs towards their own kind.  It is done because minorities are a “soft target”; they need to obviously ‘get with the program’ and what would accomplish this better than a little humilliation.

If I were to map out a means by which a majority could somehow suppress the will of a minority to assert its equal status, I could not follow a better blueprint than the one practiced in America.  ”Acceptable” minorities are ones who: agree with my politics, generally listen more than they speak, smile constantly, do not assert themselves as equals in event on conflict, and who in attire and behavior match closely to the majority standard.  The tension that would supposedly exist between majority and minority is transferred from Uncle Tom to minorities who hold on to some aspect of their natural instinct and behavior.  The Uncle Tom’s may get ahead by kissing up, scoffing at their less than subservient fellow minorities and wonder why they just can’t get with it.  The latter have an uphill battle, essentially dealing with two hostile groups.
